I got played :(

Just a quick little something that on my mind at the moment.

Yesterday I stopped at the grocery store
I parked and got out of my car
I was approached by an older man
He proceeded to tell me that his car is broken, he just called the auto store
and he needs a hose that is $14.99
then he pointed at a car down the aisle that had it's hood up
He told me that he is not a drunk and that he is embarrassed but just needs to get it fixed so he can get home.

This has happened to me more than a few times
and every time, I give any cash that I have on me to that person because
I always hope that someone would do that for me, if I ever needed it
And I am not dumb, I know people try to scam people all the time

But I always find myself thinking, well what if he really is genuine and needs help?
and what is the $5 in my purse going to do for me?

So I always give in and try to help, hoping that it was the truth.....

So I gave him the $5 I had and went into the store for no more than
2 minutes to get an avocado and a tomato.
And when I came out the mans car was gone.
And I felt like an idiot

But I continue to do it.
I guess I keep thinking that maybe one time I will actually be helping someone
and I can't get over the feeling that they really do need a little help.
But now im kind of bummed about it.
I'm not sure what I'll do next time this situation comes about
What should I do? Am I a bad person if I lie and say I have no money?

What do you usually do?

On a lighter note.........
Here is a little Lieutenant Whitey to give you a smile :)
He ate $40 in cash yesterday, but how can you be mad? He's too cute!

  1. I think you did the right thing! It's only $5 and it's important to give people the benefit of the doubt. It sucks you got played, but better luck time...:(

And your doggy is so cute!
Hope you have a better day tomorrow,
    Eri xx

i've given away too much money and thought the same thing..
    its such a tough call!
hopefully he didn't use the money for anything illegal.. which is highly unlikely haha.

  3. This is a situation that really, really ticks me off. No matter how much or little you gave the man, it's a real a-hole thing to do. There are people out there who need the help. There are peopel who I would love to help, but I never do because of scammers like this.

    You're a much better person than I.

  5. My dad always says: "God will not judge you for what they do with the money, but He will judge you."
As long as your intentions are pure, you my friend, are a good samaritan. :)
